Weighty Matters

Question of the Day

February 3, 2009 · 8 Comments

On The Biggest Loser tonight Jillian said something that made me stop. She said that it’s bullshit when trainers tell people they’ve lost inches and not pounds. Yet when I first started on my journey, that is what happened to me. I’d stay very steady in terms of my weight and lose weight occassionally, but inches would down steadily.  I don’t think the friends who were there with me and saw the pictures were blowing smoke.  And I could see changes in the pictures.

So what that change all in my head?? Was I blowing smoke up my own ass?? Is it bullshit???

I was ticked she said this too & immediately said it was bullshit! I’m a prime example of that myself. I did lose alot of weight with the program that I was on before but I kept dropping sizes.

I love Jillian but thought that was a load of poo!

Anyway, you ARE progressing, my friend!

I don’t know why Jillian would say that. She seems like such a smart person and knowledgeable trainer. I, personally have experienced this same thing.

Why would it be bullshit? I weigh the same I did five years ago, but have more muscle and less fat. I’m smaller in inches, more fit, yet weigh the exact same as before.

My wife has gone through the exact same thing. Major body comp changes but nothing on the scale.

Maybe the TV trainers are bullshit? :)

No you were not wrong. I remember the photos and saw differences. She’s a flake.

That comment REALLY surprised me too… the only thing I can think of is that she may have been talking about trainers that aren’t so good… and don’t have any measurements to show the inch-loss, but still say that to cover their butts (and their ineffective program). As a trainer, everything I’ve researched supports the idea that a well-designed workout program, combined with the appropriate diet, especially for beginners to exercise, can lead to fat loss, while maintaining or even building a little muscle mass. It gets tons more complicated for long-time, experienced excercisers, because bascially you need a calorie deficit to lose fat, and a calorie surplus to gain muscle – normally two opposing goals. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen.

I just finally caught up and watched last night…I have to say, I had the exact same reaction! I was like..WHAAAA??? She’s crazy!!! And I really like her too…8(

She says it because the contestants are rated solely on weight loss. Her success is based totally on weight loss. The show doesn’t give an award for most inches lost.

Regardless, you, I, and everyone else who does weight training of any kind know that a scale is not a reliable indicator of changes going on. Heck you eat one wrong thing the day before, and that sucker can shoot up one or two pounds. I really wish they looked at more than just the scale. I know why they don’t but nonetheless they have a really good opportunity to really change the messages associated weight loss.
